The BBC Breakfast star will soon be swapping the newsroom for the ballroom as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing – and fans may see his wife and kids supporting him on the hit reality competition
Dan Walker has been announced as one of the contestants for Strictly Come Dancing ’s 2021 series and one person viewers can expect to see cheering him on from the studio is his wife, Sarah.
The 44-year-old BBC Breakfast star and his devoted wife this year celebrate 20 years of marriage together after tying-the-knot back in 2001.
And the couple had a romantic start to their marriage as they met and fell for each other at university two years before they swapped vows.
Dan and Sarah have gone on to welcome three children together, daughters Susanna and Jessica, as well as a son named Chuck.
While the family is completed by the presence of a four-legged friend, their adorable cockapoo pet dog named Winnie.
Dan and Sarah met at the University of Sheffield back in 1999 – where Dan graduated with a Masters degree in broadcast journalism.
And the family now live in Sheffield, in South Yorkshire, so that Dan can be within commuting distance of his job on the BBC sofas in Salford.
But being back in the city where his romance blossomed is also a daily reminder for Dan where his marriage and family life all began.
Discussing his choice to move back to the Yorkshire city with the Daily Mail in 2018, Dan said: “My wife Sarah and I moved to Sheffield last year because it’s played a big part in our lives – we both studied here and it’s where I began broadcasting.”
Dan keeps the details of his married and family life mostly private – with the faces of his children covered up when he shares photos of them on Instagram.
It is likely his loved ones will feature on Strictly later this year as the show traditionally features interview with family members who share their pride at watching their loved ones skip across the dance floor in sequins.
And it seems Dan could be one to watch on the show – as bookies reckon he is one of the favourites to win.
Leading bookmaker Coral have suggested the star is third favourite to win with odds of 6-1 putting him behind former Corrie actress Katie McGlynn and McFly singer Tom Fletcher.
Coral’s Harry Aitkenhead said: “Dan Walker has been linked with Strictly every year for as long as anybody can remember and now 2021 is finally the series that he will compete in.
“We think he’s got a lot of potential to go a long way on the dance-floor, making him the third favourite to win the show at odds of 6-1.”
Tom Fletcher is the 4-1 favourite, ahead of Katie McGlynn at 5-1.
Meanwhile, the star is sin good company for the 2021 series – which will see him test his dance skills against fellow celebs while under the critical eye of judges Craig Revel Horwood, Shirley Ballas, Motsi Mabuse and Anton du Beke.
The other confirmed contestants other than Dan, Tom and Katie for Strictly 2021 so far are TV presenter AJ Odudu, Bake Off star John Whaite, CBBC presenter Rhys Stephenson, Peep Show star Robert Webb, and Dragon’s Den businesswoman Sara Davies.
